What is fitness age?

Fitness age is the age at which your cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂max) equals the average for the general population. If your VO₂max matches the median for a typical 35-year-old, your fitness age is 35 — regardless of your birthday. It reframes a lab number as something intuitive: a single age that reflects how well your heart, lungs, and muscles deliver and use oxygen. Because cardiorespiratory fitness declines predictably with age, comparing your value to age-and-sex norms produces a meaningful “biological” age for your fitness.

The concept was popularized by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), who found that estimated fitness age tracks closely with long-term health outcomes — often more closely than chronological age alone.

What is VO₂max, and why does it matter so much?

VO₂max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use per minute during intense exercise, measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). It’s the ceiling on your aerobic engine, and it’s one of the most studied numbers in exercise physiology because it reflects the combined health of your heart, lungs, blood, and muscles.

Here’s why longevity clinicians pay attention to it: higher cardiorespiratory fitness is consistently associated with lower risk of dying from any cause. A large meta-analysis found that each 1-MET increase in fitness (about 3.5 mL/kg/min of VO₂max) was associated with roughly a 13% lower risk of all-cause mortality (Kodama et al., JAMA, 2009). A separate study of more than 120,000 patients reported that the benefit of higher fitness continued at the highest levels tested, with no observed upper limit (Mandsager et al., JAMA Network Open, 2018).

How do I find my VO₂max?

You likely already have it:

  • Apple Watch — reported as “Cardio Fitness” in the Health app.
  • Garmin — shown as VO₂max in Garmin Connect after outdoor runs or rides.
  • WHOOP and Oura — report estimated VO₂max or a closely related cardio metric.
  • Clinical CPET (cardiopulmonary exercise test) — the gold standard, measured directly with a mask during a graded treadmill or bike test.

Wearable estimates are convenient and useful for tracking trends; a clinical CPET is the most accurate. If you don’t have any of these, the calculator can produce a rough estimate from your age and resting heart rate — but a measured value is strongly preferred.

How do I improve my VO₂max?

VO₂max responds to training at any age. The most effective, evidence-supported approaches include:

  • Zone 2 base training — sustained, conversational-pace cardio (30–60 minutes) that builds aerobic capacity and mitochondrial density.
  • High-intensity intervals — repeated hard efforts (for example, 4×4-minute intervals near maximal effort with recovery between) are among the most efficient ways to raise VO₂max.
  • Consistency and progressive overload — total weekly aerobic volume, gradually increased, drives long-term gains.
  • Strength training and body composition — because VO₂max is expressed per kilogram of body weight, improving muscle-to-fat ratio can raise the number.
