Two published, no-caliper estimators are offered. The U.S. Navy method uses log-transformed circumference measurements (Hodgdon JA, Beckett MB, U.S. Naval Health Research Center, 1984): for men it uses height, neck, and waist; for women, height, neck, waist, and hips. Relative Fat Mass (RFM) uses only height and waist (Woolcott OO, Bergman RN, “Relative fat mass (RFM) as a new estimator of whole-body fat percentage,” Scientific Reports, 2018): RFM = 64 − 20 × (height ÷ waist) for men, 76 − 20 × (height ÷ waist) for women. Fitness categories are general references from the American Council on Exercise. All circumference methods are estimates — accuracy depends on measurement consistency, and they can differ from DXA or other lab methods by several points.

What is body fat percentage?

Your body fat percentage is the share of your total weight that’s fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, organs, and water. Two people at the same weight and height can have very different bodies — one carrying more muscle, the other more fat. That’s why body fat percentage is often a better signal than the scale or BMI: it separates fat mass from the lean mass you generally want to keep. It’s one useful marker of body composition, not a verdict on health or worth.

How do you measure body fat without calipers?

Both methods here use a simple tape measure instead of skinfold calipers or a lab scan:

  • U.S. Navy method — uses height, neck, and waist (plus hips for women) in a formula developed by the U.S. Navy and still used in military fitness testing. More inputs, and generally a little more precise.
  • Relative Fat Mass (RFM) — uses just height and waist. Fewer measurements, and it was validated against DXA (a clinical body-composition scan) in a large study.

Measurement technique matters more than which method you pick: measure at the same spots, at the same time of day (mornings are most consistent), relaxed and without sucking in.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Healthy ranges differ by sex and shift with age, ancestry, and athletic status, so treat these as general references rather than hard targets:

Navy or RFM — which should I use?

Either is fine; they’re both estimates. The Navy method uses an extra measurement or two and tends to be a little more precise across body types, while RFM is quicker and needs only height and waist. The most useful habit is to pick one and stick with it, since switching methods introduces differences that have nothing to do with your actual body. This tool shows the other method as a cross-check so you can see the spread.

How accurate are these estimates?

Tape-measure methods are convenient but approximate — they can differ from a DXA scan by several percentage points, and a small error in your waist measurement can move the result a point or two. That’s why the single number matters less than the direction it moves over weeks and months. For a precise, one-time reading, a clinical scan like DXA is the gold standard.

What body fat percentage can’t tell you

Body fat is one marker among many. Where fat sits (around the organs versus under the skin) matters for health, and so do your muscle mass, metabolic markers, hormones, sleep, and fitness — none of which show up in a tape measurement. A number in the “average” band isn’t a problem to fix, and a low number isn’t automatically better.
